He Pursues Us

Have you ever walked into someone’s house and immediately realized they were cooking or baking something delicious?

The wonderful smells of chocolate chip cookies, bacon, fresh bread, homemade pasta sauce, or cinnamon rolls all have the ability to saturate the entirety of a home, and fill it with the mouth-watering aroma of tasty food.

It doesn’t matter what part of the house you might be in, if it’s open-aired to the kitchen, you’re going to know that something delightful is cooking. Great food smells permeate a home even when you’re behind a closed door. They have the ability to capture attention and powerfully draw you in because your hungry stomach longs to find the source of such goodness.

Much like a home filled with captivating aroma of amazing food, God’s love and pursuit of us as his children infuses every part of our lives. There is no place we can go to get away from it, because his pursuit is in the very air we breathe. Psalm 19 uses the metaphor of the sun to describe God’s pursuit because “nothing is hidden from its heat,” and goes on to conclude with, “let the words of my mouth and meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight” (v. 14).

Why? Because the words we speak and even the ponderings of our hearts are fully visible to God. His love comes after us in not only what can be heard via spoken word, but what is thought about in the privacy of our inward dialogue. He sees and hears it all, and the Bible says that God still pursues us.
